About

In the chalk counties of England there are churches, cottages and farm walls built from flint. The stone is knapped by hand to expose a dark, glassy face, then set into lime mortar. Nobody was trying to make something beautiful. They were using what the ground gave them, carefully. Eight hundred years later those walls are still standing, and still look right.

That is roughly how we think about lighting.

Most rooms are finished twice. First by an architect or a builder, and then — much later, usually in a hurry, usually online — by whoever has to choose the lights. It is the last decision in a renovation and it gets the least attention, which is strange, because it is the one you look at every evening.

Flint exists because that final layer deserves better. Not more expensive. Better considered.

What we sell

Lighting that is traditional enough to have character and contemporary enough not to date: aged brass and bronze, opal and ribbed glass, ceramic, linen, warm nickel. Familiar forms, refined. Pieces that work in a Georgian hallway, a Victorian bathroom or a new extension without announcing which decade they were bought in.

How we price it

So that a whole house is possible. A renovation needs eight, twelve, twenty fittings. If good lighting is only affordable in the hallway, most of the house gets the compromise. We would rather you had considered light everywhere.

Where things stand

We are new, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. Our range is selected from manufacturers we have chosen carefully; we do not have a workshop and we will not pretend to. Every order is dispatched from within the United Kingdom on a tracked service.

Over time more of the range becomes our own: our finishes, our modifications, and eventually our designs. That is the direction, and we would rather show you the progress than overstate the present.

Who we are

Flint is run by Ned Fenwick, a sole trader based in the South Hams in Devon. There is no call centre and no ticket queue — messages come to one inbox and are answered in order.

The details that finish a room should be considered as carefully as the room itself.
